SBC-Standard The data standard for libraries

Library identifier

The library identifier has seven digits and uniquely identifies each library. The leading digits stand for the body the library belongs to; the remaining digits come from that body's own numbering — a membership, customer or school number. The sections below are ordered by that body: once a library has found the section it belongs to, everything it needs for its identifier is in that one place.

Catholic libraries#

Starts with Library Remaining digits Example
1 library of the Borromäusverein digits 2–7: six-digit membership number with the Borromäusverein 1140360
20 library of the St. Michaelsbund digits 3–7: seven-digit membership number with the St. Michaelsbund without the leading 70 — or the five-digit library number, which is the last five digits of the membership number 2010360

Protestant libraries#

The identifier starts with 3. Digits 2 and 3 name the regional body:

Body Digits 2–3
Ev. Literaturportal / individual members 01
library of the Bavarian association of Protestant libraries 02
library of the Baden regional association 03
library of the Braunschweig regional church 04
library of the Hannover advisory service 05
library of the Hessen-Nassau association 06
library of the Kurhessen-Waldeck association 07
library of the Nordelbien association 08
library of the Oldenburg advisory service 09
library of the Pfalz regional church 10
library of the Düsseldorf advisory service 11
library of the Westfalen association 12
library of the Stuttgart advisory service 13

Digits 4 to 7 are assigned by the respective library advisory service in the regional churches of Rheinland, Westfalen and Hannover, and centrally by the Ev. Literaturportal in Göttingen for all others.

Libraries of the Büchereizentrale Schleswig-Holstein#

The identifier starts with 4010. Digits 5 to 7 are the three-digit library number of the Büchereizentrale — library number 421 thus becomes the identifier 4010421.

School libraries#

Federal state Starts with Remaining digits Example
Baden-Württemberg 8 digits 2–7: six-digit school number, that is the eight-digit office number without the leading 04 8141872

Hamburg 503 digits 4–7: four-digit school number 5035856
Hesse 502 digits 4–7: four-digit school number 5023607
Lower Saxony 51 digits 3–7: five-digit school number 5136730
North Rhine-Westphalia 6 digits 2–7: six-digit school number from the LDS Düsseldorf 6193458
Rhineland-Palatinate 52 digits 3–7: five-digit school number 5262884
Saarland 4011 digits 5–7: three-digit school number 4011333
Schleswig-Holstein 7 digits 2–7: six-digit school number, that is the seven-digit office number without the leading zero 7707253

Library with a DBS-ID#

Libraries holding an identification number of the German library statistics start with 9. The DBS-ID consists of two letters and three digits: the two letters are converted into a three-digit number with leading zeros, as follows: AA=001, AB=002, AC=003 … ZY=675, ZZ=676. The three digits of the DBS-ID are taken over unchanged.

The DBS-ID ZY432 therefore becomes the identifier 9675432:

9 675 432
│ │ └── the three digits of the DBS-ID
│ └────── the two letters as a number (ZY = 675)
└──────── library with a DBS-ID

Other libraries#

If none of the bodies above applies, the identifier starts with 21. Digits 3 to 7 are then the five-digit customer number at bibservice/IBTC — customer number 99 thus becomes the identifier 2100099.
